I took up running about ten years ago. But I don’t call myself a runner. I don’t run very fast or very far. I don’t log miles or keep time or wear a bracelet that tracks my heartbeat. I’ve been wearing the same frayed sports bra and hideous nylon shorts forever, though I re-up on a new pair of Brooks trainers from
Thank you for writing about this! I’ve been wanting to mention it for years. I get where you’re coming from and freedom of movement’s where it’s at, but there are crazies out there. I mourned for days for the school teacher. Keep chasing the peace and beauty, but for Heaven’s sake, get pepper spray! Don’t tell me you’re running in the dark. I’ll have to go on tranquilizers. Scares the hell out of me! Would you want your daughter doing this? Would you worry? Carry an ax. It’ll be good for chopping something. Yes, I’m becoming unraveled. Wouldn’t you if I did it, albeit at a much slower pace…
Another great column (and thanks for the Savannah Agenda shout out). As a casual runner prone to stopping to take photos of old buildings and construction sites, I appreciate your exercise style. On another note, I actually had someone call the police on me a couple years back for throwing my dog's poop in a neighbors city trashcan. WTF, right? Anyway, keep up the great work.

So well expressed and thought provoking. I’m sure your dogs would be perceived as a threat (even if they’re pussies) so I refuse to worry about you!

“Refuse to let the darkness take over” just a beautiful way to express taking a stand.
Great story that gives us all the courage we need to not allow fear win. Bravo!
Also, change your route. Look at different scenery. Being paranoid is a good thing in the world we're living in. Yes, carry a weapon!
